Virginia Baptist Women in Ministry Spring Conference and Annual Meeting

Virginia Baptist Women in Ministry held their spring conference and annual meeting, May 11, 2007, at Grace Baptist Church in Richmond. It was an occasion for women ministers throughout Virginia to consider the demands of family and profession, to gain spiritual and physical resources, and to reconnect as friends and colleagues. Current moderator Judith Bailey concluded her term and welcomed the new officers following their election.

On the theme "Life in the Balance: The Many Roles of a Woman in Ministry," the conference addressed the issues of women who care for themselves and their families while maintaining a professional life. The conference schedule included a panel discussion on balancing roles; dinner (and door prizes!); business session and election of officers, small group experiences in ways to care for ourselves through yoga exercises, breath prayer, art and spirituality, centering prayer; and a closing worship.

Participating in the panel discussion, moderated by Becky Glass, pastoral counselor, were Victoria Atkinson White, minister to alumni, BTSR; Amy Patteson Holtz, part-time minister and full-time mom; Nancy Stanton McDaniel, pastor, Rhodesville Baptist Church; Barbara Sadtler, prison chaplain (retired); and Judith Bailey, interim co-pastor, Oakland Baptist Church.

The small group experiences on self-care included the following topics and leaders: Centering Prayer led by Vallerie King, pastor, Emmaus Baptist Church; Introduction to Yoga led by Mark Cooper, associate professor, VCU; Breath-Prayer led by Ann Charlescraft, chaplain, VCU Medical Center; and Art and Spirituality led by Suzanne Stovall Vinson, minister at Ginter Park Baptist Church.

Elizabeth Rickert Dowdy, pastor of Tar Wallet and Oak Grove Baptist Churches, Cumberland, led worship.

Officers elected for the 2007-2008 are: Elizabeth Rickert Dowdy, moderator; Suzanne Stovall Vinson, moderator-elect; Judith Bailey, past moderator; Barbara Sadtler, treasurer; Amy Holtz, recording secretary; Becky Glass, membership secretary; Nancy Rock Poti, Synergy editor.

Minutes

The meeting was called to order by the outgoing Moderator, Judith Bailey. Those in attendance were provided the opportunity to introduce themselves.

Barbara Sadtler, Treasurer, provided the Treasurer’s report. She reported that the remaining funds from the NMEX grant had been deposited into the VBWIM account.

Judith Bailey shared the Moderator Report for 2006-07. Here are the highlights:

• Fall Conference–“Storytelling and Worship,” featuring Kate Campbell
• New website, new name: www.vbwim.org
• Dinner at VGAB on November 9, 2006: “Sharing Our Affirmations and Challenges”
• Partnership with “Living Peace: Getting Messy With Spirituality”
• Breakfast for VCBF, March 10, 2007
• VBWIM Members led in worship and provided refreshments at BTSR, April 18, 2007
• Spring Conference and Annual Meeting, May 11, 2007
• Receipt of NMEX Grant Money for Conferences
• Planning for 20th Year Anniversary, Fall, 2008–“Transitions” Conference

Nominations were taken from the floor. Elizabeth Lott was nominated to fill another vacancy for term ending in 2008. There were no other nominations from the floor.
The motion that the slate be accepted was made, and the vote took place. The motion passed.
